This Girl Can Organise
This week we were lucky enough to interview the brilliant Nicola Lewis, founder of This Girl Can Organise. TGCO was founded in early 2017 after Nicola bravely took a leap into the unknown and left her long standing career in investment banking to pursue her own dreams!
The power women behind this business, Nicola, has successfully turned her hobbies and skills into a flourishing business helping others get and stay organised! Right up our street as you can imagine!
Whether your home is in need of a total declutter, or your personal life needs some serious organising... Nicola is on hand to assist in any way possible.
So, what exactly is personal organisation you ask? It’s simply about helping people declutter their homes and lives. Living in a clear, decluttered space can make a huge impact on a person’s wellbeing.
Personal organisation is a massive industry and shows no signs of slowing down. As our lives become increasingly busier we are finding the need for these types of services even more necessary in order to balance daily lives, work and homelife.
Nicola describes her company as “A bespoke and personal streamlining service for busy people and homes.”
1. So, let’s start at the very beginning, what did you want to be as a child?
I always wanted to be Michaels Jackson’s backing dancer ha ha. I was obsessed with dancing and performing from the age of 3 till I was 15... other jobs were an air stewardess and a vet.
2. Well you must aim high! Have you always been a super organised person or is there still hope for the disorganised readers out there?
Yes, I was brought up in a busy, structured and loving home. My parents both worked so we all had to help out. Everyone had a job to do, obviously as kids it wasn’t anything to strenuous, but we made our beds, tidied and cleaned our bedrooms to help our parents.
3. How did ‘This Girl Can Organise’ come about then?
I was made redundant from my job in December 2017 after working several years in investment banking and decided it was time to do something for myself. Whilst I was on gardening leave I realised I wanted to be in a job that made me smile and to do something I was passionate about. Organising was top of my list, so after a few weeks of researching I discovered there wasn’t a service out there helping busy people declutter and tidy their homes so This Girl Can Organise was created and I haven’t looked back since.
4. That’s great! What is the most common aspect you get asked to help with when you go to new jobs?
Often people get so overwhelmed with the clutter in their home that they can’t quite believe where it has all come from. Clients want to create more space, but you need to remove the clutter before you can organise an area. For an example, kitchens are often areas of the home where we either neglect or ignore what’s inside the cupboards and don’t fully utilise the space. Once you’ve emptied the cupboards 30% is normally thrown or recycled away as it’s either expired or has no further use.
5. What would you say is the best thing about your job?
Watching my client’s reactions once we’ve finished the job, it truly is the main reason why I love doing my job. Creating a new space that they couldn’t vision by themselves or just helping them clear an area they struggled to do alone is a very emotional. I’m very lucky to be doing this job and sharing these experiences.
6. I can imagine it’s highly rewarding. Do you have any easy tips for those readers who want to make their homelife a little more organised?
Always plan before you buy, think to yourself do I need this and where can I store it. I always recommend you write things down that you wish to achieve and slowly tick them off. Remember one tick is better than no ticks.
I set an alarm and clean the house for 30 mins a day (with music on obvs) this enables me to do the little jobs around the house and I feel a sense of achievement knowing it's done each day rather than leaving it to one day at the weekend. Create a home for your belongings, using containers will enable you to locate items quicker and will make tidying up a speedy job!
7. Good advice! How important do you think it is to a person’s state of mind/wellbeing that their environment is organised and orderly?
Very important, it gives you an enormous sense of clarity walking into a tidy organised room. It makes you realise you can achieve absolutely anything when your home space is in order.
8. Lastly, what have you got planned in the future for ‘This Girl Can Organise’?
Lots.... my 5-year goal is very exciting but for the minute I’m remaining in my lane and working hard. Having your own business means wearing lots of different hats so it’s important to take your time and learn each task properly. I’ve just started filming YouTube videos and am really enjoying that. I’d love to work on my tv show helping and inspiring others to declutter and get organised.
Quick fire round:
Tea or coffee?
Hanging or folding?
What about rolling?
Starter or dessert?
